Visa has announced an enhanced version of its A2A Protect solution, introducing a unified fraud score that integrates Featurespace technology. The update aims to provide real-time risk insights to help banks stop account-to-account fraud before funds leave customer accounts.

Payments technology company Visa has announced an enhanced version of its A2A Protect platform, designed to deliver real-time risk insights to financial institutions. The updated solution features a unified fraud score, marking Visa's first in-market integration of Featurespace technology. The tool is intended to help banks detect fraud faster and reduce unnecessary alerts before money leaves customer accounts.

Alongside the A2A Protect update, Visa is developing Visa Graph IQ. This graph-powered, agentic investigation capability aims to provide deeper investigative insights to help financial institutions uncover fraud networks, identify money mule activity, detect emerging threats, and accelerate risk investigations.

The launch comes as account-to-account (A2A) payments experience rapid global growth. A2A transactions are projected to surpass 5.8 trillion by 2028, representing a 160% increase from 2024. The Asia Pacific region is expected to account for more than half of global A2A consumer transactions by 2028. However, this growth has been accompanied by rising fraud risks. Asia Pacific accounts for an estimated 67% of the world's USD 1.03 trillion in annual scam losses, with Asia recording USD 688.42 billion in scam-related losses in 2024.

A2A Protect utilizes advanced artificial intelligence and transfer learning to give banks immediate access to global risk insights. According to the company, the system allows financial institutions to benefit from intelligence on day one without waiting months to develop models from their own data or waiting for other banks to join a consortium. Participating banks can also incorporate network-level signals to improve the detection of emerging threats across the ecosystem.

'As account-to-account payments continue to accelerate across Asia Pacific, financial institutions are looking for ways to grow digital payments with confidence while maintaining a seamless experience for consumers and businesses,' said Serene Gay, Head of Value-Added Services, Asia Pacific at Visa. 'The latest enhancements to A2A Protect combine Visa's network intelligence with advanced AI capabilities to help our clients detect fraud earlier, respond faster to emerging threats, and strengthen trust in the digital payments ecosystem.'

Financial institutions that opt into network-level intelligence sharing gain visibility into emerging scam hotspots and coordinated fraud activity. According to Visa, A2A Protect has demonstrated the ability to increase fraud detection by up to 75% in the first six months of deployment.

The solution integrates with existing banking systems through a single API, reducing implementation complexity. Each alert includes a plain-language explanation to help fraud teams evaluate transactions quickly without impacting genuine customers.

"The rapid growth of digital and account-to-account payments globally highlights the urgent need for robust, real-time security infrastructure. Visa's integration of advanced AI and features like unified fraud scoring addresses a critical operational challenge for financial institutions: stopping sophisticated fraud networks before transactions are authorized. As digital transaction volumes scale toward 2028, embedding proactive intelligence directly into payment systems will be vital for maintaining consumer trust and reducing ecosystem-wide losses." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
