NEW DELHI — Appasamy Associates, a global surgical ophthalmology manufacturer backed by private equity firm Warburg Pincus, has announced the acquisition of RUCK, a German manufacturer specializing in ophthalmic surgical products and systems.
Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed by the companies.
Founded in 1978, Appasamy has built a significant global footprint in the ophthalmology sector. The company's manufacturing and technical expertise spans intraocular lenses (IOLs), surgical systems, diagnostic equipment, lasers, and microsurgical instruments. According to company statements, Appasamy manufactures approximately 5 million IOLs annually, with more than 100 million of its lenses implanted worldwide.
The acquisition aligns with Appasamy's strategic goal to expand its global surgical ophthalmology operations by integrating complementary technologies and capabilities into its corporate group. Prior to this deal, Appasamy had established medical technology centers of excellence in Denmark and San Francisco. The addition of RUCK integrates specialized phaco-vitrectomy capabilities into this existing technology base, while development and engineering operations will remain stationed in Germany.
RUCK brings over four decades of experience in the field of ophthalmic surgery. Its product portfolio features established systems such as Pentasys, Qube, and Qube Pro, which are utilized for cataract and vitreoretinal procedures. These systems are widely used and trusted by medical professionals across Germany and the Benelux region.
Commenting on the integration, Senthil Kumar, CEO of Appasamy, stated that RUCK will gain access to additional resources and capabilities to support the ongoing development of the Qube Pro and future product pipelines. He noted that the company looks forward to collaborating with the RUCK team to build upon their shared strengths.
The parent company's growth trajectory includes a major milestone in 2024, when Warburg Pincus acquired a controlling stake in Appasamy. That transaction marked the private equity firm's largest healthcare sector investment in India to date.
"This strategic acquisition highlights a growing trend of Indian medical technology companies expanding their global footprint through targeted cross-border M&A. By acquiring RUCK, Appasamy Associates not only integrates specialized European engineering and phaco-vitrectomy capabilities into its portfolio, but also strengthens its competitive positioning in key international markets like Germany and the Benelux region. For private equity-backed enterprises in the healthcare sector, acquiring established regional players is an effective mechanism to accelerate global product expansion and technological integration." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
