Chennai-based deeptech startup Meine Electric is deploying a pilot Iron-Air Battery system at the NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Station in collaboration with AIC-AU to evaluate its Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) capabilities under real-world utility conditions.

NEW DELHI / CHENNAI — In a monumental leap forward for India's clean-tech and deeptech ecosystem, Chennai-based startup Meine Electric has announced a high-stakes strategic pilot project at the NTPC Simhadri Thermal Power Station. Executed in collaboration with the Atal Incubation Centre – Anna University (AIC-AU), this initiative aims to rigorously evaluate indigenous Iron-Air Battery technology for Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES) applications under punishing, real-world utility operating conditions.

As India aggressively expands its renewable energy footprint, the intermittency of solar and wind power continues to pose significant challenges to grid stability. Addressing this critical bottleneck, Meine Electric is positioning itself at the vanguard of next-generation energy storage. Notably, Meine Electric proudly stands as the first company in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) region and only the third globally to pioneer Iron-Air LDES technology, placing Indian deeptech innovation firmly on the global map.

The upcoming pilot at NTPC Simhadri will focus heavily on assessing the technical performance, operational reliability, and core systemic characteristics of the indigenous battery architecture. By embedding the system within a thermal power station's demanding environment, the project will generate invaluable empirical data. These operational insights are expected to shed light on the system's suitability for extended discharge cycles, effectively bolstering India’s push toward energy self-reliance and technological sovereignty.

A major milestone preceding this deployment has been the independent validation of Meine Electric’s proprietary Fast Charge Long Discharge (FCLD) technology by Customized Energy Solutions (CES), the parent entity of the India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). Rigorous testing at the CES Battery Laboratory evaluated the technology's electrochemical performance, capacity retention, and operational stability. The evaluation specifically tested a challenging six-hour charge and 18-hour discharge cycle, delivering the third-party validation necessary to propel Meine Electric into larger-scale commercial deployment.

Priyansh Mohan, Co-Founder and CEO of Meine Electric, emphasized the significance of the partnership, noting that deploying the technology at an NTPC facility provides a crucial proving ground. The initiative is poised to accelerate the commercialization of cost-effective LDES solutions tailored specifically to the structural complexities of India’s rapidly evolving power grid.

Industry experts observe that as power demand surges alongside industrial growth, traditional short-duration lithium-ion batteries fall short of meeting multi-hour or multi-day storage needs. Iron-Air batteries, leveraging abundant and inexpensive iron materials, present a highly scalable, safe, and economically viable alternative for grid-scale stabilization. This collaboration between a pioneering deeptech startup, an academic incubator like AIC-AU, and a public sector energy titan like NTPC exemplifies the power of the triple-helix model in driving India's green energy transition.

"The partnership between Meine Electric and NTPC Simhadri marks a transformative milestone for India's deeptech and clean-energy sectors. Long-duration energy storage is the missing puzzle piece in our nation's ambitious renewable energy transition, and homegrown innovations are leading the charge. By proving their proprietary Iron-Air Battery technology under demanding utility conditions, Meine Electric is not only validating its engineering excellence but also setting a global benchmark for scalable, cost-effective grid stabilization. At StartupLanes, we believe that deeptech startups solving structural infrastructure challenges will dictate the future of India's economic resilience. This pilot opens the floodgates for indigenous hardware innovation, proving that Indian startups can pioneer world-class solutions that impact planetary-scale challenges." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
