Election Commission Launches Door-to-Door Voter Verification Drive in Jharkhand

The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday launched a door-to-door verification drive as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Jharkhand, according to a senior official. The campaign, titled 'home to roll verification', is scheduled to continue until September 4.

Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Jharkhand, K Ravi Kumar, stated that the primary objective of the initiative is to ensure that the names of voters belonging to the same family and household are registered in the electoral roll of the same polling station. Under this campaign, booth-level officers (BLOs) are conducting visits to households to confirm that no eligible Indian citizen is left out of the electoral lists.

"Following the publication of the draft electoral roll on August 5 under the SIR, it is now being ensured through house-to-house verification that the name of every eligible citizen is included in the draft electoral roll, or that those whose names are not included have submitted Form-6 and the digitisation has been completed," Kumar said.

During the verification process, BLOs will provide necessary assistance to voters for filling out Form-8 to facilitate the transfer of names to the correct polling station, particularly if a voter's name is currently registered at a different location than their residential area. As part of this exercise, officials will also affix 'family together sticker' prompts in households to encourage families to verify that all adult and eligible members are registered at the same polling station.

The current verification drive follows the publication of draft electoral rolls on August 5, which came after the deletion of over 43.61 lakh names. Prior to the SIR enumeration exercise, Jharkhand recorded 2.64 crore electors. Following the conclusion of the enumeration phase—which took place between June 30 and July 29 through door-to-door distribution, collection, and verification of forms—the draft electoral rolls now list 2.21 crore voters. This total comprises 1.12 crore men, 1.08 crore women, and 260 third-gender electors.

Additionally, the EC has extended the deadline for filing claims and objections under the SIR of electoral rolls in the state to September 15. Consequently, the final publication of the revised voter list has been deferred from the initial schedule of October 7 to October 19. The claims and objections period was previously set to conclude on September 4.
