Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva to discuss the global economic outlook and India’s evolving growth trajectory.

The meeting took place on Tuesday on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors (FMCBG) Meeting held in Asheville, United States.

According to an official statement from the Finance Ministry, the two leaders reviewed the global economic outlook and India's growth trajectory. During the discussion, Finance Minister Sitharaman highlighted India's strong macroeconomic fundamentals. She also emphasized the importance of robust, evidence-based surveillance frameworks that adequately reflect the structural shifts occurring in Emerging Markets Developing Economies (EMDEs).

The Finance Ministry stated that the discussion covered structural shifts currently underway in India and the necessity of appropriately reflecting these developments in macroeconomic assessments and growth projections.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva acknowledged India's strong economic performance and track record, noting the institutional strength built by the Indian economy.

Following the meeting, Ms. Georgieva posted on X, describing the interaction as an "excellent exchange of views with India’s Finance Minister @nsitharaman - reflecting on India’s stellar growth performance, the global outlook, and our shared resolve to work ever-more-closely together."

The talks also addressed the IMF’s capacity development initiatives. This included discussions on support for strengthening institutional capacity, macroeconomic policymaking, and statistical systems within Emerging Markets Developing Economies.

Both leaders concluded the meeting by emphasizing the significance of continued engagement between India and the IMF. They noted that ongoing collaboration supports analytical capabilities, promotes sound macroeconomic policies, and contributes to overall global economic resilience.

"Discussions of this nature between national financial leadership and international institutions like the IMF are critical for aligning global growth projections with ground-level economic realities. As emerging markets undergo rapid structural shifts, ensuring that international surveillance frameworks accurately capture these changes helps in shaping sound macroeconomic policies and building long-term financial resilience." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
