Gold prices witnessed an upward trend across key Indian metropolitan cities on August 17, with both 22-carat and 24-carat variants registering notable price hikes. Kolkata and Bengaluru emerged as the priciest markets, while Chennai and Hyderabad recorded relatively lower rates, reflecting steady retail demand and shifting market dynamics.

NEW DELHI: Gold prices in India registered a synchronized upward movement across major metropolitan cities on August 17, tracking broader market sentiments and steady domestic demand. Investors and retail buyers alike witnessed a modest yet notable increment in both 22-carat and 24-carat gold variants, impacting bullion markets from the national capital down to the southern hubs.

On a pan-India level, the retail benchmark for 22-carat gold settled at ₹14,320 for 1 gram—marking an increase of ₹50—while 8 grams of the same purity scaled up by ₹400 to reach ₹1,14,560. Market analysts note that despite continuous price fluctuations, consumer appetite for the yellow metal remains resilient as a traditional hedge against market volatility.

A closer look at the city-wise performance reveals interesting regional variations. Kolkata and Bengaluru recorded the highest price tags among the surveyed metros. In Kolkata, 1 gram of 22-carat gold was priced at ₹14,420, with its 24-carat counterpart touching ₹15,141 per gram (and ₹1,21,128 for 8 grams). Similarly, Bengaluru closely trailed with 22-carat gold at ₹14,380 per gram and 24-carat gold at ₹15,099 per gram, making southern and eastern markets some of the costliest regions for bullion buyers today.

Meanwhile, financial capital Mumbai mirrored the baseline national average, trading at ₹14,320 for 1 gram of 22-carat gold and ₹15,036 for 1 gram of 24-carat gold, with the 8-gram variants moving up by ₹400 and ₹416 respectively. In the northern and western corridors, Delhi and Ahmedabad also saw firm upward revisions. Delhi consumers shelled out ₹14,370 for 1 gram of 22-carat gold and ₹15,089 for 24-carat gold. Ahmedabad recorded nearly identical figures, with 22-carat retailing at ₹14,374 per gram and 24-carat at ₹15,093 per gram.

On the other end of the spectrum, Chennai and Hyderabad offered comparatively competitive pricing for retail buyers. In both southern cities, 1 gram of 22-carat gold was priced lower at ₹14,270 (up by ₹50), while 8 grams stood at ₹1,14,160 (up by ₹400). For 24-carat gold in Chennai and Hyderabad, consumers paid ₹14,984 for 1 gram and ₹1,19,872 for 8 grams, registering an increase of ₹53 and ₹424 respectively.

As retail inflation and global macroeconomic factors continue to influence commodity valuations, experts advise investors to monitor intraday market trends closely before making significant capital allocations into physical gold or gold-backed financial instruments.

"The consistent upward trajectory of gold prices across major Indian urban centers underscores the deep-rooted cultural preference and strategic economic reliance on bullion as a reliable wealth preservation tool. Even minor daily increments reflect underlying macroeconomic tensions and shifting investor sentiments favoring safe-haven assets over riskier equity classes. For the broader financial ecosystem, particularly fintech platforms offering digital gold and asset-backed investment portfolios, these steady price movements stimulate sustained retail engagement and digital adoption. As high-net-worth individuals and retail participants alike continue to hedge against market unpredictability, gold maintains its indispensable status as a cornerstone of personal finance and strategic asset diversification in India." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
