Gourmet Popcornica Launches Indigenous Non-GMO Popcorn Maize Hybrids to Reduce Import Dependence

Agri-business venture Gourmet Popcornica has officially launched two high-expansion, non-GMO popcorn maize hybrid seeds, named ‘Krisna459’ and ‘Godari234’. The launch event took place on Monday at the company’s factory located in Musunuru, Andhra Pradesh.

The seeds were unveiled by Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan, in the presence of Andhra Pradesh Governor S Abdul Nazeer and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. Managing Director SBP Pattabhi Rama Rao represented the company during the proceedings.

According to a statement issued by Gourmet Popcornica, the introduction of these hybrids marks a shift in its ongoing contract-farming operations. Previously, the company engaged growers to transition from commodity maize to value-added popcorn farming with assured off-take. With the rollout of ‘Krisna459’ and ‘Godari234’, the company stated that farmers gain ownership of domestic genetics rather than depending on imported hybrid seeds.

The newly launched hybrids were bred and trial-tested over five growing seasons in collaboration with India's leading maize research institutions. The company reported that the varieties match the kernel size and popping expansion of leading imported benchmarks while providing pest tolerance, short duration, and yield capabilities suited for local conditions.

The initiative currently impacts over 17,500 farmers cultivating nearly 40,000 acres across eight states. These farmers receive assured off-take and contract pricing, yielding an average of 4.5 tonnes of wet cob per acre. The company expects this model to improve incomes for small and marginal farming families.

India's popcorn maize market has expanded from approximately 50,000 tonnes in the 2014-15 period to roughly 1.3 lakh tonnes in 2025-26. Domestic production currently meets nearly 70 per cent of national demand. This shift to local production has reportedly saved the country an estimated ₹810 crore in foreign exchange during the 2025-26 fiscal year, with industry projections maintaining that India is on track to end popcorn imports entirely by 2030.

Vice-President CP Radhakrishnan noted that the indigenous hybrids contribute to domestic agricultural self-reliance by reducing the need for imported alternatives and retaining economic value within local farming communities. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu highlighted that the agri-tech innovation aligns with the state's vision of empowering farmers through targeted technology.

SBP Pattabhi Rama Rao, Managing Director of Gourmet Popcornica, remarked that the development represents the culmination of research utilizing India's soil, science, and farming workforce.
