Hindalco Industries has commissioned India's first Superfine Precipitated Aluminium Trihydrate (PPT ATH) manufacturing plant in Belagavi, Karnataka. Built with an initial annual capacity of 30,000 tonnes, the facility is designed to strengthen domestic production of specialty materials utilized in fire-safe electrical and infrastructure applications.
According to an exchange filing by the company, the new manufacturing unit aims to meet almost the entire domestic demand for safer cables from the wire and cable industry. The plant's capacity is designed to be expandable up to 60,000 tonnes in phases, depending on the growth of the domestic market.
PPT ATH is a high-value, halogen-free flame-retardant material. It finds application in halogen-free flame-retardant cables, polymer insulators, thermal insulation, composites, and paints. In cabling applications, the material suppresses flame spread and smoke generation without releasing halogen acid gases.
Hindalco stated that the plant's commissioning aligns with rising demand driven by stricter fire-safety standards, increased adoption of electric vehicles and modern infrastructure, and a broader industry shift toward sustainable and high-performance materials.
Managing Director Satish Pai noted that the Belagavi facility strengthens the company's market position and enhances its high-value specialty alumina portfolio in India. He added that the investment reflects a focus on moving up the value chain and delivering advanced solutions for both domestic and global customers.
Saurabh Khedekar, CEO of the Alumina Business at Hindalco Industries, highlighted that the facility supports self-reliance by offering an indigenous solution that reduces import dependence for the wire and cable sector.
The facility was developed using in-house technology and research and development. It features automated controls for critical processes and an integrated manufacturing system designed to maintain feedstock quality and product consistency.
Notably, the plant is powered entirely by renewable energy sourced from biomass, solar, and wind. Hindalco stated that this makes the facility the world's only specialty alumina plant to operate exclusively on renewable energy. The new infrastructure is set to support the development of advanced materials for next-generation electrical and mobility applications, with phased expansions scheduled to meet future market demand.
"The commissioning of Hindalco's new specialty alumina plant in Karnataka marks a significant step toward import substitution and industrial self-reliance in a critical manufacturing segment. By integrating in-house research with entirely renewable energy sources, the project demonstrates how traditional heavy industries can scale high-value specialty production while meeting strict environmental standards. As safety regulations tighten across the infrastructure and electric vehicle sectors, domestic availability of advanced flame-retardant materials will play a vital role in supporting resilient supply chains." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
