Private Equity-Venture Capital (PE-VC) investments in India reached over $8 billion across 106 deals in October 2026, according to data from market research firm Venture Intelligence. The surge was primarily led by a $5.6 billion equity investment in IDBI Bank by Canada-based Fairfax Financial Holdings.
This transaction marked the largest private equity investment in India since 2020, according to Arun Natarajan, Founder of Venture Intelligence. The mega deal helped October 2026 record the highest monthly investment level in over four years, surpassing the previous month's high of $6.1 billion across 125 deals.
On a year-on-year basis, overall investments grew by nearly 50 percent compared to $5.5 billion across 136 deals recorded in October 2025. Mega deals—defined as transactions valued over $100 million—accounted for $7 billion of the total investment across five deals during the month.
Other prominent mega deals in October included KKR's $632 million investment in Gentari, the Indian renewable energy arm of Malaysia's state-owned PETRONAS. Additionally, Brookfield completed a $450 million acquisition of ESR India’s operating logistics and industrial portfolio. Natarajan noted that alongside the IDBI transaction, the month continued to see a strong focus on infrastructure sectors by large private equity investors.
A notable spike in PE-VC activity during August, September, and October followed a tepid start to the year. This recovery has brought total year-to-date investments in 2026 to $39.7 billion across 1,171 deals, already surpassing the $39 billion raised across 1,425 deals during the entire 2025 calendar year.
An analysis of funding stages shows mixed trends. Investments in early-stage companies increased to $377 million in October 2026 from $304 million in October 2025. In contrast, growth-stage investments halved to $584 million compared to $1 billion in the same period last year. Late-stage funding saw a similar contraction, declining to $240 million in October 2026 from $1.4 billion a year ago.
"The October 2026 investment numbers demonstrate the continued appeal of India's core infrastructure and banking sectors for global institutional capital. While mega deals like the Fairfax investment in IDBI Bank heavily skew the headline figures, the underlying trend shows sustained interest in infrastructure assets. However, the contraction in growth and late-stage funding indicates that investors remain selective, balancing large-scale capital deployments with caution in other market segments." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
