India experienced a significant dip in precipitation during the month of August, with rainfall dropping 16% below average. According to data released by the India Meteorological Department on Monday, this marks the lowest August rainfall recorded in three years.
Weather officials noted that the El Nino weather pattern played a primary role in suppressing the monsoon activity over the country during the month.
The sharp decline in August rainfall has directly impacted the broader seasonal figures. Data compiled by the India Meteorological Department shows that the seasonal monsoon rainfall deficit widened to 14% at the end of August, up from a 13% deficit recorded at the conclusion of July.
