Engineering and construction major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has announced that it has secured an order valued at up to ₹5,000 crore to design and build an Automated People Mover (APM) system for Phase 1 of Dubai's Al Maktoum International Airport. The company is executing the project in collaboration with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), according to an exchange filing.
The project is developed by Dubai Aviation City Corporation and implemented through Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects as part of the airport's long-term expansion programme. L&T noted in the filing that the fully developed Al Maktoum International Airport is planned to become the world's largest airport, targeting a capacity of 260 million passengers and 12 million tonnes of freight annually.
As part of the contract scope, L&T will manage the design, procurement, delivery, and integration of critical APM infrastructure and systems. This includes guideways, DC traction substations, power distribution, signalling and telecommunications, onboard communication systems for vehicles, platform screen doors, and depot equipment.
Commenting on the development, Ramkumar S, Executive Vice President & Head of Transportation Infrastructure at L&T, stated that the project demonstrates the scale and complexity of integrated APM rail systems that the company is positioned to deliver. He highlighted that the combination of MHI's APM systems and L&T's integrated systems experience, supported by its engineering design centre, enables execution with a focus on safety and quality.
This announcement follows several major contract disclosures by the company. On Monday, L&T reported that L&T Energy Hydrocarbon Offshore secured an 'Ultra Mega order' worth over ₹15,000 crore from a client in the Middle East for offshore facility development. Additionally, the company announced orders tied to a strategic partnership with Together AI to construct an NVIDIA B300 AI Factory in India through its AI infrastructure subsidiary, LTN Compute.
During trading hours following the announcements, L&T shares were trading at ₹4,079.60 per share, marking an increase of 38.30 points or 0.95 percent.
"Larsen & Toubro's recent contract wins highlight the strength of large-scale engineering conglomerates in securing major international and domestic infrastructure projects. Winning a critical transit system contract for an expansion of this magnitude demonstrates deep technical capabilities and successful global collaborations, such as the partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. For the broader business ecosystem, such consistent execution across diverse sectors like transportation, hydrocarbons, and AI infrastructure reflects strong operational scale and long-term project visibility." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
