Madhya Pradesh Records 5.33 Lakh Tonnes of Summer Moong Procurement in 2026

NEW DELHI — Madhya Pradesh has recorded a record high summer moong procurement of 5.33 lakh tonnes for the 2026 season, according to official data. This marks an increase compared to the previous year, when about 3.93 lakh tonnes were procured during the summer 2025 season.

Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the Central government initially approved the procurement of 4.54 lakh tonnes of summer moong for the 2026 season following a request from the Madhya Pradesh government. Later, an additional 84,492 tonnes was approved to protect farmers' interests without imposing any financial burden on the state government.

With these revisions, the total approved quantity for procurement in the state reached 5,39,072 tonnes. The procurement window has now concluded, with the state successfully purchasing 5.33 lakh tonnes of the produce. Operations were managed through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India (NCCF), allowing farmers to secure fair prices at the Minimum Support Price (MSP).

During the summer of 2025, the state had procured 3,93,123 tonnes against an approved quantity of 4,19,692 tonnes. The growth in both approved limits and actual procurement in 2026 indicates expanded participation and market support.

Meanwhile, the broader agricultural landscape shows mixed trends for the ongoing kharif 2026 cropping season. As of August 21, national moong acreage stood slightly lower at 32.68 lakh hectares, compared to 33.92 lakh hectares during the same period last year. Key producing states such as Rajasthan, Karnataka, and Maharashtra reported lower acreage due to weak monsoon conditions, while states like Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh registered increases in cultivation area.

In Karnataka, harvesting has begun in parts of North Karnataka, though production is expected to be lower on account of reduced acreage, delayed monsoons, and erratic rainfall affecting yields. The Central government has set the MSP for moong at ₹8,780 per quintal for the 2026 season.
