Mental healthcare organisation Amaha is poised to finalise a ₹100 crore fundraise, which will be directed towards expanding its network of hospitals and clinics across the country. The capital will also be used to build infrastructure, strengthen clinical teams, and invest in technology to deliver specialist mental healthcare services.
The funding round has drawn participation from existing investors Lightbox Ventures and Fireside Ventures. It also includes contributions from London-based life skills platform Sandbox International Holdings Limited (SIHL), Nithin Kamath through Rainmatter, and the family offices of Shreyas Shibulal, Ashish Bharat Ram, and Adarsh Jalan. Additionally, the ₹100 crore round incorporates ₹10 crore in debt financing from Alteria Capital.
Founded by psychiatrist Dr. Amit Malik, Amaha’s operational journey began after initial attempts to integrate mental health services within existing multi-specialty hospital systems proved unfeasible due to differing hospital economics, where surgical specialties typically take precedence. After exploring options, Dr. Malik established the network independently, initially relying on personal funds and support from friends and family.
Reflecting on the operational model, Dr. Malik noted that standard Western healthcare models require adaptation for the Indian context, which tends to be more family-centric. Amaha currently operates two hospitals with approximately 30 beds in Bengaluru, alongside nine centres across Mumbai, Delhi NCR, and Bengaluru.
Looking ahead, the organisation has outlined an expansion plan aimed at adding around 1,000 beds over the next five years, translating to roughly 30 hospitals and 60 clinics. Amaha provides services covering digital self-care, outpatient and inpatient treatment, and community support for various mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, addiction, schizophrenia, and personality disorders.
"Amaha's ₹100 crore fundraise highlights the growing investor confidence in specialized healthcare sectors within India. Scaling mental healthcare infrastructure requires a careful balance of clinical capability, technology, and capital efficiency. As founders look beyond traditional hospital ecosystems to build dedicated networks, securing a mix of equity and debt financing provides a stable foundation for long-term expansion in a vital yet underserved market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
