Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical company Natco Pharma announced on Tuesday that it is investing $14 million, equivalent to over ₹130 crore, in the US-based biotechnology firm eGenesis Inc. The transaction is being executed through two of the company's international subsidiaries.
According to a regulatory filing by Natco Pharma, the funding is being channeled through convertible promissory notes. Specifically, Natco Pharma (Canada) Inc is contributing $9.5 million, while Natco Pharma South Africa Proprietary Ltd is investing $4.5 million in the biotechnology enterprise.
This latest round follows an earlier investment made by Natco Pharma in 2024, when it put $8 million into eGenesis via preferred stock. With the current transaction, Natco's cumulative investment in the US firm has reached $22 million.
eGenesis focuses on genome engineering approaches aimed at developing safe and effective transplantable organs. The objective of its research is to address the global shortage of organs and transform the treatment landscape for organ failure. The company utilizes its proprietary eGenesis Genome Engineering and Production (EGEN) platform, which is designed to address cross-species molecular incompatibilities and viral risks through genetic engineering.
The US-based firm is currently advancing several clinical development programs, including applications for kidney transplants, acute liver failure treatments, and heart transplants.
In March 2024, eGenesis marked a medical milestone by performing the world's first porcine kidney transplant in a living patient. The procedure received authorization from the US Food & Drug Administration (USFDA) under the Expanded Access pathway. This procedure was subsequently followed by porcine kidney transplants in two additional patients, with the filing noting that the clinical outcomes have been exceptionally positive.
"Natco Pharma's ongoing investment in eGenesis highlights a strategic shift toward high-impact biotechnology and cross-border collaboration in deep tech healthcare. By backing a company pioneering genome engineering for organ transplants, Natco is diversifying its portfolio beyond conventional pharmaceuticals into a specialized sector with profound global implications. For Indian pharmaceutical players, participating in advanced biotech ventures in regulated markets represents a forward-looking approach to long-term value creation." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
