Commodity exchange NCDEX has launched a cash-settled futures contract for Chennai rainfall to help market participants manage weather-related risks. The new contract complements its existing Mumbai rain product, covering both major Indian monsoon cycles from June through December.

Commodity exchange NCDEX has introduced an exchange-traded weather derivatives futures contract tied to rainfall in Chennai. Designated as RAINCHNNAI, the contract is designed to provide market participants with a transparent, standardised, and cash-settled instrument to manage rainfall-linked financial risks.

According to the exchange, the contract targets financial exposure arising from the North-East monsoon. This specific monsoon system accounts for nearly 70 per cent of Chennai's annual rainfall over a four-month period, primarily impacting southern India.

The launch follows NCDEX's earlier introduction of the RAINMUMBAI contract, which was developed in collaboration with IIT Bombay and uses official data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Together, the Mumbai and Chennai contracts extend rainfall risk management across the broader Indian monsoon cycle, covering both the Southwest Monsoon from June to September and the Northeast Monsoon from September to December.

Kedar Deshpande, Chief Business Officer at NCDEX, noted that the Chennai contract uses a scientifically structured Cumulative Deviation Rainfall model. This model measures deviations of actual rainfall from the Long Period Average using decades of data recorded at Chennai's Meenambakkam and Nungambakkam weather stations.

Unlike traditional insurance products, these weather derivatives settle strictly on observed meteorological data, removing the requirement for manual loss assessment. The exchange stated that this mechanism allows for faster settlement cycles and improves operational efficiency for market participants.

"The introduction of weather derivatives like the Chennai rain futures by NCDEX marks a significant step forward in financial risk management for businesses exposed to seasonal vagaries. By utilizing transparent, data-driven models based on IMD metrics rather than traditional loss-assessment insurance, these cash-settled contracts offer speed and efficiency. For enterprises operating in regions heavily dependent on specific monsoon cycles, this provides a standardized tool to hedge against weather-induced financial volatility." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
