Kotak Mahindra Bank has submitted the names of executive directors Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap to the Reserve Bank of India as potential successors to CEO Ashok Vaswani. Vaswani announced he will not seek reappointment when his term ends on December 31, 2026.

MUMBAI — Kotak Mahindra Bank has taken the first step in its leadership transition by recommending two internal candidates to succeed Chief Executive Ashok Vaswani when his term concludes next year, according to sources familiar with the matter.

India's fourth-largest private lender has submitted the names of executive directors Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for approval. Under Indian banking regulations, financial institutions are required to recommend at least two potential candidates for CEO positions. The regulator holds the authority to approve one of the proposed names or request alternatives if they are deemed unsuitable.

Current CEO Ashok Vaswani, a former Barclays and Citigroup executive, assumed the role on January 1, 2024, succeeding founder Uday Kotak after more than two decades at the helm. Vaswani stated that he would not seek reappointment when his current term ends on December 31, 2026, citing personal reasons. Founder Uday Kotak's family remains the largest shareholder in the bank, holding a 26 percent stake.

The upcoming leadership appointment is being closely monitored by market participants. Under Vaswani's leadership, Kotak Mahindra Bank set its strategic sights on becoming India's third-largest private lender by after-tax profit. The incoming CEO will be expected to maintain and accelerate that growth momentum.

The bank has not publicly indicated a preference between the two submitted candidates, and media inquiries to Kotak Mahindra Bank, Saha, and Kashyap went unanswered.

Anup Saha joined Kotak Mahindra Bank in January of this year after previously leading non-bank lender Bajaj Finance, and currently oversees the bank's retail banking business. Paritosh Kashyap is a long-standing Kotak veteran who manages the wholesale banking operations.

Following recent market activity, shares of Kotak Mahindra Bank recorded a 5 percent gain over the last five trading sessions.

"Leadership transitions in systemic financial institutions like Kotak Mahindra Bank are critical milestones that investors and regulators watch very closely. By proposing experienced internal leaders like Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap, the bank demonstrates stability and continuity in its strategic roadmap. For large enterprises aiming for aggressive growth targets such as becoming a top-three lender, a well-managed succession plan ensures that operational momentum remains steady without disruption." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
