NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok K Lahiri chaired a review meeting with Ladakh administration officials to discuss infrastructure, entrepreneurship, and sustainable growth. The discussions focused on leveraging renewable energy, tourism, and local products like pashmina while utilizing initiatives such as the Atal Innovation Mission to support young entrepreneurs.

NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Ashok K Lahiri has stated that Ladakh's development strategy should focus on its unique regional strengths, including natural resources, cultural heritage, human capital, and renewable-energy potential. The approach aims to ensure environmental sustainability while creating livelihood opportunities for the residents of the Union territory.

Lahiri chaired a review meeting with senior administrative officers, including Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra, to evaluate ongoing projects and address key challenges across infrastructure, connectivity, education, tourism, energy, water, and employment.

During the meeting, Chief Secretary Kundra presented an overview of Ladakh's financial position, highlighting major economic challenges alongside sector-wise Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP), Gross State Value Addition (GSVA), and employment trends. Addressing a request from the administration to strengthen the local entrepreneurship ecosystem, Lahiri stated that NITI Aayog would extend support through the Atal Innovation Mission to train and mentor young entrepreneurs. Proposals were also made to create a consolidated database of promising ideas and connect local entrepreneurs with external mentors.

Discussions also covered science, technology, and innovation support to develop a roadmap with measurable milestones for social and economic development. The meeting addressed infrastructure gaps in energy and connectivity, reviewing initiatives such as the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), power transmission projects, road connectivity, a new domestic airport terminal, and 4G expansion. Lahiri reviewed the financial sustainability of the power sector, discussing measures to improve revenue realization through net metering and decentralised renewable-energy generation.

Tourism was identified as a key economic opportunity, with an emphasis on diversifying into astro-tourism, winter tourism, and cultural tourism alongside improving connectivity. The potential of local products such as seabuckthorn, apricot, and pashmina was also reviewed. Kundra emphasized the need for modern processing facilities, value addition, and branding, while Lahiri noted the importance of strengthening the pashmina value chain while preserving traditional craftsmanship.

In the education sector, discussions centered on improving school infrastructure, addressing hostel requirements and dropout rates, and promoting STEM education, foundational literacy, and skill development in remote areas. The administration reported that 99.5 percent coverage has been achieved under the Jal Jeevan Mission for drinking-water supply.

Additionally, the meeting addressed employment opportunities in animal husbandry, sheep farming, and poultry, highlighting the need for modern facilities, viable business models, and market linkages.

"The focus on leveraging regional strengths such as renewable energy, tourism, and local products like pashmina provides a clear economic roadmap for Ladakh. By integrating institutional mentoring through initiatives like the Atal Innovation Mission, the Union territory can build a sustainable foundation for local entrepreneurs. Fostering public-private collaboration and modernizing value chains will be critical to overcoming geographic and logistical challenges, ultimately translating these growth strategies into long-term employment opportunities." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
