Patanjali Foods saw its Q1 operating margin expand by 340 basis points due to long positions in edible oils, helping offset margin contractions in its FMCG segment. Management has reaffirmed its FY27 EBITDA growth guidance of 12-15 percent for the FMCG business.

NEW DELHI — Patanjali Foods has reported mixed operational trends for the quarter, marked by strong performance in its edible oils segment balanced against cost pressures in its fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) businesses.

According to management commentary, the company currently maintains long positions in edible oils. This strategy has allowed Patanjali Foods to benefit from prevailing inflation in the sector, contributing to a 340 basis point expansion in Q1 operating margins. However, the company noted that this inflationary environment is persistent, driven by ongoing supply hiccups and higher transportation costs.

Conversely, margins in the company's FMCG businesses—spanning both foods and home and personal care (HPC) categories—contracted during the quarter. Management highlighted that this pressure was primarily the result of sharp input-cost inflation, which was notably pronounced within the staples category.

Despite near-term margin pressures in staples and FMCG, leadership has reaffirmed its long-term outlook, maintaining its FMCG FY27 EBITDA growth guidance at 12 to 15 percent.

Following these performance indicators, financial estimates for FY27E and FY28E have been adjusted upward by 3 to 4 percent to factor in the Q1 operating beat observed in the edible oils division. Analysts have also introduced FY26-29E projections, building a projected revenue and earnings per share (EPS) Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 10 percent and 23 percent, respectively. The stock maintains a 'BUY' rating with a revised target price of ₹580, based on a rolled-forward valuation to June 2028E at a P/E multiple of 30x.

"Patanjali Foods' Q1 performance highlights a classic balancing act often seen in consumer goods companies with diversified portfolios. While tactical positioning in the edible oils segment successfully cushioned the impact of supply chain costs and delivered an operating margin beat, input cost inflation in staples remains a clear operational challenge. Maintaining steady EBITDA guidance for the FMCG segment points to management's confidence in long-term demand and pricing strategies, making disciplined cost management critical as these inflationary cycles persist." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
