Nepal Flash Flood Death Toll Reaches 903 with Thousands Still Missing

The death toll resulting from flash floods in Nepal has reached 903, authorities reported on Monday. The disaster, which struck northern and central regions on August 26, continues to unfold as rescue teams recover additional bodies and search for thousands of missing individuals on the sixth day of operations.

According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), bodies have now been recovered from all eight affected districts. The disaster is believed to have been triggered by a collapse or avalanche of ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border, causing widespread devastation across towns and villages.

Rescue efforts remain active, with members of the Nepal Army utilizing inflatable rafts to search for bodies washed away in the Narayani River in Chitwan, alongside ongoing efforts to locate people stranded by the disaster.

District-wise figures released by the NDRRMA indicate varying impacts across the region. The highest number of recoveries has been reported in Chitwan with 272 bodies, followed by Nawalparasi East with 207, Nawalparasi West with 151, and Gorkha with 62.

Additional recoveries include 95 bodies from Nuwakot, 55 from Dhading, 37 from Tanahu, and 24 from Rasuwa district.

Authorities stated that 4,247 people are still listed as missing. This total includes 85 security personnel and 320 foreign nationals, as rescue operations race against time to locate survivors and account for the missing.
