United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor visited the Jamnagar refinery complex, hosted by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh Ambani and Executive Director Anant Ambani. The visit offered the US officials a first-hand view of the operations at what is recognized as the world's largest refinery.
During the tour, the visitors were briefed on Reliance's New Energy giga-factories, which are currently being commissioned in phases, alongside data centres under construction. Mukesh Ambani and Anant Ambani outlined the company's long-term vision for the Jamnagar complex, positioning it as a center for deep-tech, innovation, and advanced manufacturing.
The itinerary featured wide-ranging discussions regarding the global energy landscape, resilient supply chains, and opportunities for commercial partnerships across both conventional and new energy sectors. The dialogue also touched upon reliable and affordable energy supplies, technological advancements, and the necessary investments required to meet growing market demand.
Additionally, the discussions explored the intersection of energy and digital infrastructure. Topics included the role of dependable power supplies in supporting data centres and the broader expansion of the digital economy. Mukesh Ambani and Anant Ambani shared their perspectives on collaboration opportunities with US entities, emphasizing complementary strengths in engineering, technology, and advanced manufacturing.
Secretary Rubio's stop in Gujarat follows earlier engagements in Mumbai, where he held substantive talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Those discussions centered on the India-US strategic partnership, trade deal negotiations, and energy commerce—including India's petroleum imports and prospects for expanding purchases of American energy resources. He also paid respects to the victims of the November 2008 Mumbai terror attacks during his time in the city.
"The high-level engagement between Reliance Industries leadership and US diplomatic officials highlights the increasing intersection of large-scale energy infrastructure and digital technology. As major conglomerates expand into new energy giga-factories and digital infrastructure like data centres, cross-border commercial partnerships and supply chain resilience become critical focus areas. Such dialogues signal potential avenues for future technological and capital collaboration between Indian enterprises and global markets." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
