CHENNAI — The Chennai police have launched an investigation into the death of V Harish, a 27-year-old financial content creator who operated under the brand name 'Finance With Harish'. Harish was found dead at a rented villa near Muttukadu following an apparent suicide, authorities reported on Wednesday.
Harish had built a significant digital footprint, accumulating over 1.3 million followers across Instagram and YouTube by publishing content focused on finance and investments.
The police stated that they received notification of the incident on October 20. Following his death, the victim's father, Vinayagam, filed a formal complaint at the Kanathur police station against Jason Samuel, a YouTuber and the CEO of Zemuria Inc.
According to the police, the complaint states that a video published by Samuel on October 18 questioned Harish's credentials with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). The complainant alleged that this video triggered intense online pressure and harassment. Reports also indicate that following the release of the video, Harish's social media accounts were mass-reported and disabled.
In response to the allegations, Samuel released a public statement denying any involvement in cyberbullying. He maintained that his actions were taken in the interest of consumers by highlighting that Harish lacked a SEBI Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) license. Samuel further stated in his public remarks that pointing out regulatory violations and a lack of proper licensing does not amount to inciting suicide.
The Kanathur police have officially registered a case of unnatural death. As part of the ongoing inquiry, authorities are reviewing statements provided by both parties and analyzing digital evidence, which includes a video reportedly recorded by Harish before his passing.
"This tragic incident highlights the growing risks and intense pressures faced by digital content creators, particularly in the financial sector where regulatory compliance is paramount. As the influencer economy expands, creators must ensure they hold the necessary regulatory credentials like a SEBI RIA license to maintain credibility and consumer trust. At the same time, this case underscores the critical need for healthier discourse and responsible engagement within the digital ecosystem to prevent online disputes from escalating into irreversible personal tragedies." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
