Telecom operator Vodafone Idea is set to introduce new voice-only plans by the end of October 2026. The rollout aligns with regulatory directives from TRAI to offer a wider selection of short-duration options for low-income users.

Telecom service provider Vodafone Idea is preparing to launch new voice-only plans by the end of October 2026, according to industry sources. This strategic adjustment follows a directive from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which called for a broader selection of voice-only options tailored for low-income users.

Previously, TRAI instructed all telecom operators to introduce shorter-duration tariff plans of up to 30 days. While initial reports indicated a deadline of October 21, sources note that operators have until October 30 to comply, following an updated Gazette notification published on September 30.

Competitor activity in this segment is already underway. Bharti Airtel has rolled out three such plans with pricing ranging between ₹185 and ₹206. According to Morgan Stanley, these new offerings are priced 7 to 16 percent cheaper than Airtel's existing entry-level plans. Meanwhile, Reliance Jio has yet to officially announce its offerings in this category.

Current market tariffs reflect existing offerings across major providers. Reliance Jio currently offers annual and quarterly plans priced at ₹1,748 and ₹448, respectively. Vodafone Idea provides annual and quarterly plans at ₹1,849 and ₹470, while Bharti Airtel offers corresponding plans at ₹1,849 and ₹469.

The upcoming implementation by Vodafone Idea marks another step by telecom operators to align their tariff structures with regulatory expectations for short-duration and low-income accessibility.

"Regulatory compliance often drives structural shifts in mature markets like telecom. TRAI's directive for shorter-duration, voice-only tariff plans creates a necessary framework to better serve low-income consumer segments. As Bharti Airtel has already demonstrated with its new offerings, telecom operators must adapt their entry-level pricing strategies to meet these compliance standards while managing margins in a competitive landscape." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
