The Nifty 50 opened lower at 24,118 on August 31, 2026, and traded down nearly 0.7 per cent at 24,000 amid a broad-based market sell-off. All major sectors recorded losses, with weak advance-decline ratios indicating strong bearish momentum across the index.

The Nifty 50 began the trading session on August 31, 2026, with a gap-down at 24,118, compared to its previous close of 24,176. The index extended its decline after opening, trading at the 24,000 mark, which reflects a decrease of nearly 0.7 per cent.

Market breadth displayed a clear bearish bias, with the advance-decline ratio standing at 7/43. HDFC Bank, which rose 1.5 per cent, and Bajaj-Auto, up nearly 0.8 per cent, emerged as the top gainers among Nifty 50 constituents. Conversely, Adani Enterprises and Hindalco Industries led the losses, falling 3.1 per cent and 2.8 per cent respectively.

Selling pressure was distributed across the board, with all sectors trading in the red. Nifty Metal and Nifty Media registered the steepest declines, each falling 2.4 per cent, closely followed by Nifty Realty, which dropped 2 per cent.

Technical indicators on the Nifty 50 chart point to a breach of a key support level, increasing the likelihood of a continued downward trend. Consequently, Nifty futures are also facing downward pressure.

The September expiry Nifty futures contract opened lower at 24,244 against last week's close of 24,342, and subsequently traded at 24,200, down about 0.6 per cent. The contract breached its support level at 24,250, signaling a bearish outlook. While a recovery to reclaim the 24,250 level remains technically possible, market momentum and broad-based selling suggest lower probability for an immediate rebound.

For intraday tracking, analysts note potential movement toward the 24,000 level, with a break below that threshold risking a further slide to 23,800. On the upside, a rise above 24,250 could allow buyers to push the contract toward 24,350. Overall market conditions indicate that sellers currently maintain the upper hand, pointing to a higher probability of further downside in the near term.

"Broad-based market corrections like the one observed in today's Nifty trading session serve as a crucial reminder for investors and traders to manage risk actively. When all major sectors trade in the red and key support levels are breached, market sentiment clearly favors caution. Business owners and financial stakeholders should closely monitor these macroeconomic indicators and market volatility, as broader market trends often influence capital availability, investor confidence, and overall business sentiment across the startup and enterprise ecosystem." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
