Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged citizens to embrace the 'Vocal for Local' initiative during the upcoming festive season and prioritize purchasing 'Made in India' products. Addressing the nation during his monthly radio broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat', the Prime Minister highlighted upcoming festivals and called for honoring local artisans and craftspeople.
'Our festivals and celebrations not only uphold our traditions but also provide us with opportunities to connect with one another. In the coming days, we are set to celebrate several more significant festivals,' PM Modi said during the broadcast.
Highlighting the upcoming calendar, the Prime Minister noted that the festival of Janmashtami falls on September 4th, followed by Vishwakarma Puja later in the month. He stated that these occasions provide a vital opportunity to honor the artisans, craftspeople, and community members associated with traditional trades. Looking further ahead to Deepawali, he urged consumers to consciously choose domestically manufactured goods.
'During this festive season, I once again urge you to be 'Vocal for Local.' Being 'Vocal for Local' does not merely mean buying earthen lamps; the vision behind it is much broader,' the Prime Minister added. He also called upon the creative community, influencers, and celebrities to help spread the message of self-reliance and inspire the public to verify that their household purchases are made in India.
The 'Vocal for Local' campaign operates as a national movement spearheaded by the Central Government and actively promoted by NITI Aayog. The initiative is designed to encourage consumers to prioritize domestically produced goods and services, thereby strengthening India's economic foundation, boosting employment, and enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
"The 'Vocal for Local' initiative serves as a major structural driver for domestic manufacturing, small businesses, and local artisans across India. For the broader business and startup ecosystem, the festive season presents a valuable market opportunity to align products and supply chains with domestic consumer demand. Emphasizing 'Made in India' goods not only strengthens local supply chains but also fosters sustainable growth and employment generation at the grassroots level, which is essential for long-term economic resilience." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
