The Tamil Nadu government has announced a series of infrastructure and institutional initiatives aimed at developing the state's sports ecosystem and supporting India's Olympic aspirations. Outlined in the 2026-27 policy note for the Youth Welfare And Sports Development Department, the measures are designed to position the state as a leading sporting hub in the country.
As part of preparations for the 2036 Olympics, the government proposes to establish discipline-specific Olympic Centres of Excellence (COEs). These centres will focus on providing advanced training infrastructure, professional coaching, sports science support, and high-performance athlete management. The facilities are intended for athletes demonstrating medal potential at state, national, and international levels.
The COEs will be supported by the proposed Tamil Nadu Olympic City. This facility is planned to offer an integrated sporting ecosystem featuring international-standard infrastructure, sports science and sports medicine, coaching facilities, residential amenities, and competition venues. The Olympic City will cater specifically to athletes who excel at the COEs to help maximize their performance potential.
To support athlete identification, the government will institute a dedicated Talent Research Wing (TRW). The TRW will use a data-driven development pathway to identify and nurture sporting talent within the 8 to 18 years age group. Selected individuals will be inducted into sports hostels based on their age, potential, and performance, where they will receive systematic coaching, sports science support, and competitive exposure. Additionally, new sports hostels are planned in cities including Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Salem.
Beyond Olympic-focused facilities, the policy note includes plans for broader sports infrastructure development. The government announced plans for a 30,000-seater international cricket stadium at Singanallur in Coimbatore. Spanning 28 acres, the stadium is slated to feature seven pitches alongside amenities such as practice pitches, gyms, a swimming pool, a lounge, and jogging tracks. The plan for an international stadium in Coimbatore was initially announced by the earlier DMK government.
Furthermore, the state is moving to expedite the completion of District Sports Complexes (DSC) across newly created districts. Construction work is currently underway for complexes in Kallakurichi, Ranipet, and Tirupathur districts, with additional action being taken to establish a new District Sports Complex in Mayiladuthurai district.
