The Tamil Nadu government held a meeting on Friday with various stakeholders to discuss the improvement, performance, and capacity of the Chennai airport. The discussions also set the process in motion for the proposed Terminal 5.
This development follows the State government's decision to drop the ₹27,400-crore greenfield airport project at Parandur. The meeting, convened by the Tamil Nadu Industries Department, brought together officials from the airport, airlines, and industry associations to review existing infrastructure and plan future expansions on the western side of the airport.
A primary focus of the meeting was expediting the proposed elevated road connecting the NH32–Tambaram-Maduravoyal corridor with Terminal 5. The National Highways Authority of India and the Water Resources Department have been directed to accelerate the process. Airport sources noted that a no-objection certificate from the Water Resources Department will be necessary for building the elevated corridor along the Adyar river bund.
Industries Secretary S. Vijayakumar stated that the discussions covered the new elevated approach road from the proposed new terminal to the Chennai bypass road, operational performance and capacity enhancement, and recommendations to improve the overall user experience.
For Terminal 5 specifically, discussions included its design, the elevated approach road linking it to the bypass, a flood study, and the preparation of a comprehensive development plan. Additionally, participants addressed the need to increase flight operations at the airport.
The State government has also called for a clear deadline and construction schedule for completing Terminal 3 and commissioning the T3 plaza, asking the Airports Authority of India to speed up the work. To monitor progress, the government has decided to conduct monthly reviews on airport operations and capacity enhancement.
Enhancing the passenger experience remains a key priority. The government plans to examine food and beverage services, lounges, and entry and exit processes. A consultant has been tasked with reviewing these areas and providing recommendations. Furthermore, authorities are exploring ways to increase air cargo capacity by encouraging more passenger flights capable of carrying cargo.
These discussions indicate that the State government is moving forward with plans to enhance Chennai airport’s operational efficiency and capacity.
