Union Defence Minister Lays Foundation Stone for ₹472 Crore Tank Overhaul Project in Jabalpur

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the ₹472 crore 'T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project' at the Vehicle Factory in Jabalpur. Addressing the gathering, the Minister stated that the role of armoured platforms in modern warfare is evolving rather than ending, despite growing global discussions regarding the vulnerability of tanks against drones.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by key dignitaries, including Secretary of Defence Production Sanjeev Kumar, Armoured Vehicles Nigam Ltd (AVNL) CMD Satyabrata Mukherjee, and Master General Sustenance Lieutenant General Amardeep Singh Aujla, alongside other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), and the armed forces.

The expansion plan at the Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur—a unit of Mini Ratna Defence PSU Armoured Vehicles Nigam Ltd (AVNL)—is designed to overhaul 80 tanks per annum. This initiative aims to ensure the timely availability of overhauled tanks to the Indian Army and enhance its operational readiness. Currently, the Indian Army requires 230 tanks to be overhauled annually. The Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi currently maintains the capacity to overhaul 150 tanks each year.

Highlighting the strategic approach of the armed forces, the Defence Minister emphasised that platforms like tanks, drones, missiles, artillery, electronic warfare systems, and energy weapons are complementary rather than substitutes. He noted that the focus remains on equipping soldiers with both tanks and drones, supported by better coordination between the two. Furthermore, he advocated for equipping existing tanks with superior sensors and capabilities to match contemporary battlefield requirements.

This development aligns with the Indian Army's broader strategy to allocate over ₹75,000 crore toward five-year restoration and modernisation orders for its ageing fleet of Soviet-origin tanks and armoured vehicles.

During his address, the Defence Minister noted that the Heavy Vehicles Factory in Avadi has supplied approximately 4,400 tanks to the Indian Army over the past four decades. He expressed optimism that AVNL, leveraging its 25 years of experience in overhauling T-72 and T-90 variant tanks, will establish new benchmarks in quality, productivity, and innovation while strengthening Jabalpur's position as a prominent hub for defence technology, maintenance, and manufacturing.
