President Donald Trump participated in a Diwali celebration at the White House on Friday, marking the occasion in the Oval Office. India's Ambassador to the US, Vinay Kwatra, was among those present for the gathering.

The tradition of hosting Diwali celebrations at the White House was established by President George W. Bush in 2003. In the initial years, these ceremonies were primarily held in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, bringing together members of the Indian American community and Indian diplomats.

The observance evolved in subsequent administrations. In 2009, President Barack Obama became the first US president to personally light a diya, or traditional lamp, at the White House during a ceremony held in the East Room.

Following that precedent, lamp-lighting ceremonies and related events have since been hosted in various locations across the White House complex, including the Roosevelt Room and the Oval Office.

"Cultural diplomacy and diplomatic engagements at the highest levels play a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties between nations. Events such as the White House Diwali celebrations highlight the growing cultural and economic interconnectedness between the United States and India, fostering an environment of mutual respect and long-term collaboration that ultimately supports cross-border business and entrepreneurial engagement." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
