GSPL Transmission Ltd (GTL), a natural gas transmission infrastructure company based in Gujarat, has announced a capital expenditure plan of approximately ₹3,500 crore over the next two to three years. The investment will focus on expanding its natural gas pipeline network, increasing the capacity of its existing grid, and extending connectivity to new geographical regions.
The investment plan encompasses about 10 pipeline and connectivity projects totaling approximately 700 km. According to the company management, roughly 60 to 65 percent of the funds will be allocated toward capacity expansion, while the remaining portion will finance the extension of the pipeline network to new areas.
The expansion programme is projected to raise the capacity of the company's high-pressure grid from 36-37 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) to around 44 MMSCMD, as determined by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board. This represents an increase of about 20 percent in rated transmission capacity.
Major capacity expansion projects include the 284-km Anjar-Palanpur pipeline, the 98-km Jamnagar-Dwarka pipeline, the 71-km Vapi-Tarapur pipeline, and the 36-km Dahej-Bhadbhut pipeline. Additional spur lines and customer connectivity projects such as Vantewad-Rajpipla, Botad-Jasdan, Mundra-Mandvi, and Amreli-Kunkavav form part of the broader portfolio. Upon completion, GTL's existing network of around 2,900 km will expand to over 3,600 km.
The Jamnagar-Dwarka pipeline is expected to connect Sun Petrochemical's exploration fields in the region, creating a new entry point for natural gas into the grid and catering to local city gas distribution networks. The initiatives were previously delayed due to regulatory approval issues, but implementation commenced in the previous financial year with EPC contracts awarded and construction underway.
Regarding funding, GTL reported holding cash and bank balances of approximately ₹2,000 crore. The management stated that the expansion will be largely financed through internal accruals and operating cash flows maintained over the past three to four years, with debt being an option only in the event of a shortfall.
Beyond Gujarat, GTL operates in other regions through its subsidiaries, GSPL India Gasnet Ltd (GIGL) and GSPL India Transco Ltd (GITL), in both of which GTL holds a 52 percent stake. GIGL operates about 1,439 km of cross-country pipeline across Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab, with Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation holding the remaining stake. GITL operates approximately 365 km of pipeline in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, connecting to the fertilizer plant of Ramagundam Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd.
For the quarter ending September, GTL reported a standalone revenue of ₹289.6 crore, marking an 8.4 percent year-on-year increase, while net profit rose 2.2 percent to ₹120.4 crore. Total pipeline transportation volumes reached 45.5 MMSCMD during the quarter, compared to 40.4 MMSCMD in the corresponding period of the previous year.
"GSPL Transmission's ₹3,500 crore capex plan demonstrates a disciplined approach to infrastructure growth, relying primarily on internal accruals and a robust cash reserve of ₹2,000 crore rather than heavy debt financing. By expanding grid capacity by 20% and extending its network into new regions, the company is positioning itself well to capture rising industrial and domestic demand for natural gas. This steady asset expansion across key industrial corridors highlights the importance of long-term capital planning and regulatory alignment in the energy sector." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
