India’s automakers have entered the Dhanteras and Diwali buying period relying on festive discounts, refreshed models, and strong sports utility vehicle (SUV) demand to sustain October's sales momentum. However, market reports indicate a clear K-shaped recovery taking shape across the sector.
Popular SUVs are currently facing tight supply constraints, while slower-moving passenger cars require substantial incentives to move. Meanwhile, rural commuter motorcycles continue to struggle in regaining sales momentum.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported very strong demand across its SUV portfolio, with physical dealership stocks close to zero for most models. Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO of the Auto and Farm Sector at Mahindra, stated that the company is operating at full capacity. According to Jejurikar, October volumes exceeded initial capacity expectations, leaving Mahindra with less than eight to nine days of SUV inventory, excluding vehicles in transit. The company maintains its mid-to-high-teen SUV growth outlook for FY27.
Similarly, Hyundai Managing Director and CEO Tarun Garg noted that record October sales were driven by strong festive demand, leaving room for continued momentum through Diwali. Domestic passenger vehicle dispatches reached an estimated record of 5.25 to 5.30 lakh units in October.
To clear slower-moving inventory, manufacturers and dealerships have introduced notable discounts and feature upgrades. Indicative benefits reach up to ₹5.5 lakh on outgoing Volkswagen Tiguan stock and ₹3.35 lakh on select Tata Curvv EV variants. In contrast, popular models continue to command minimal discounts, with offers varying by city, dealership, and variant.
Despite manufacturer optimism, dealer expectations remain guarded. According to a survey by the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Associations (FADA), only 51.65 percent of dealers expect November retail growth, down from 75.57 percent ahead of October.
Vinkesh Gulati, former FADA President and Chairperson of the Automotive Skills Development Council, pointed out that record dispatches highlight preparation for festive deliveries. However, he noted that popular SUVs face waiting periods while slower-selling models accumulate, emphasizing that managing inventory financing costs is crucial after the festive rush.
Industry-wide passenger vehicle stocks remained at 43 to 45 days, contrasting sharply with Mahindra's leaner SUV inventory levels, noted FADA President Sai Giridhar. October vehicle retail sales fell 23.80 percent year-on-year to 31.72 lakh units, though registrations rose 25.05 percent over September. Passenger vehicle retail sales declined 14.23 percent to 5.08 lakh units.
Giridhar attributed the dip to demand being deferred by the festival calendar rather than permanent demand destruction. Two-wheeler registrations dropped 28.35 percent to 23.21 lakh units, with rural sales declining 33.97 percent compared to a 20.77 percent drop in urban markets.
Sachin Mahajan, Maharashtra State Chairperson of FADA and operator of Jawa and Yezdi dealerships through Mahaveer Wheels, observed that while November should capture deferred purchases, the recovery remains uneven. Rural buyers continue to display high sensitivity to farm incomes, vehicle prices, and monthly instalments. Mahajan noted that premium motorcycle demand relies on different market drivers, meaning bustling niche showrooms do not necessarily reflect a broader commuter market recovery. Sustaining affordable-vehicle demand past Diwali remains a primary concern for the industry.
"The K-shaped recovery observed in the auto sector highlights a critical business lesson in inventory management and consumer segmentation. While premium segments like SUVs are thriving with lean inventories, foundational segments such as commuter two-wheelers and entry-level cars are facing headwinds due to rural sensitivity and financing costs. For business owners and entrepreneurs, matching supply chains precisely to localized demand is vital, as holding excess inventory post-festive season can severely impact working capital and cash flows." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
