The Indian government has approved a new tranche of 12 applications valued at over ₹7,500 crore under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), IT Secretary S Krishnan announced on Friday.
This latest round of approvals broadens the scope of the scheme by incorporating projects related to essential materials and capital goods. According to officials, this expansion is designed to widen the initiative's reach across the broader electronics supply chain.
The newly approved projects add momentum to the ongoing scheme, which is structured to build a robust domestic ecosystem for electronic components within India. A primary objective of these measures is to systematically lower the country's reliance on imported components.
Alongside component production, authorities have emphasized a focus on strengthening upstream segments of the industry. This includes targeted development in raw materials and manufacturing equipment to support integrated domestic growth.
In a related development on Friday, the government also launched the Semicon 2.0 web application portal. The portal operates under the broader Semicon India Programme.
"The approval of these 12 proposals under the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme marks a practical step toward strengthening India's manufacturing foundation. By extending support to upstream segments like raw materials and capital goods, the government is addressing structural gaps in the supply chain. This focus on domestic capacity building is essential for reducing import dependence and creating a sustainable ecosystem for hardware and electronics businesses in the long run." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
