Automobile major Mahindra & Mahindra expects its monthly electric SUV sales to reach between 11,000 and 12,000 units by March 2027. This projected growth is expected to bring the company close to the current run rate of market leader Tata Motors, as the automaker prepares for five new product launches and a substantial expansion of its manufacturing capacity.
The company currently produces approximately 8,000 electric SUVs per month, with existing capacity fully utilized. Mahindra plans to increase EV production to 12,000 units per month by February or March 2027, representing a potential 50 percent increase in monthly volumes. The company's shares surged 5 percent following its second-quarter results, with brokerages maintaining a bullish outlook.
According to VAHAN data, Tata Motors registered 1,17,547 electric passenger vehicles between January and October 2026, averaging 11,755 units per month. During the same period, Mahindra registered 66,945 units, translating to an average of 6,695 vehicles per month. While Mahindra's targeted monthly run rate of up to 12,000 units positions it within striking distance of Tata's averages, Tata's October registrations stood at 14,552 units compared to Mahindra's 8,472 units, indicating that the market leader retains stronger short-term momentum.
To support this volume growth, Mahindra plans to increase its combined monthly SUV production capacity from 64,500 units at the end of fiscal year 2026 to 82,000 units by the end of fiscal year 2027. This will comprise 70,000 conventional SUVs and 12,000 electric vehicles. An additional 10,000 units of NU_IQ platform capacity will be added at the Chakan facility, bringing total monthly capacity to 92,000 units by the end of fiscal year 2028. Furthermore, a proposed Nagpur plant is expected to add 40,000 units across two phases, lifting overall monthly capacity to 1.32 lakh units by fiscal year 2031.
The automaker's upcoming pipeline includes five launches scheduled for the first half of calendar year 2027. These comprise a NU_IQ-based SUV, an all-new electric SUV, an SUV refresh, the Scorpio Lifestyler pickup, and a new light commercial vehicle.
Financially, Mahindra sold 23,345 electric SUVs in the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, representing 12.7 percent of its total SUV volumes. The company's electric SUV revenue market share stood at 30.1 percent, outperforming its 23.2 percent share by volume and indicating a strong market presence in premium electric vehicle segments. Overall, the automotive business reported a 55 percent year-on-year increase in consolidated profit, reaching ₹2,388 crore in the second quarter, even as it lowered its tractor industry growth forecast from 5 percent to broadly flat.
Addressing external market factors, Mahindra implemented a weighted average vehicle price increase of 0.4 percent in October to offset rising copper and rubber prices, alongside other supply-chain constraints. Regarding consumer concerns over electric vehicle resale values, executive leadership emphasized evaluating vehicles based on the total cost of ownership over their lifecycle rather than residual values alone. Meanwhile, battery subscription plans currently account for less than 10 percent of Mahindra's total EV sales.
"Mahindra's strategic focus on scaling manufacturing capacity ahead of new product launches demonstrates a disciplined approach to capturing market share in India's growing electric vehicle segment. By balancing premium EV offerings with capacity expansion and disciplined cost management, established legacy players are effectively positioning themselves to challenge early market leaders. This expansion reflects broader industrial confidence and points toward a more competitive domestic EV market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
