Gold prices may be approaching an interim bottom, supported by a broader macroeconomic environment that favors a recovery despite recent market corrections. According to the latest report from the World Gold Council (WGC), two of the three historical conditions associated with gold price recoveries are currently met.
Gold closed October at USD 3,913 per ounce, marking a 6.3 percent decline for the month with losses tracked across all major currencies. The precious metal is currently trading about 25 percent below its January 2026 record high of USD 5,405 per ounce.
The WGC report indicates that the current downward movement represents a market correction rather than the beginning of a prolonged downturn comparable to the post-2011 period, largely due to a significantly stronger fundamental backdrop. The council noted that gold is trading well below its 200-day moving average and the US dollar has rallied into its top tier, fulfilling two key conditions. However, speculative positioning has not yet undergone a complete washout, which remains necessary for a sustained recovery.
Historical analysis of gold bear markets since 2005 shows that periods featuring at least two of these three conditions yielded a median three-month forward return of 4.2 percent, with positive returns observed in 90 percent of cases. When all three conditions were met, gold recorded positive returns across all five historical episodes analyzed by the council.
The WGC highlighted distinct differences between the current environment and the post-2011 peak. Real yields currently sit in restrictive territory, the US dollar remains expensive, and geopolitical risks continue to be elevated, making the post-2011 multi-year decline an inaccurate comparison for the current market phase.
On the technical front, gold has reached a downside extreme, trading approximately 10 percent below its 200-day moving average while staying above the 38.2 percent Fibonacci retracement level of USD 3,857 per ounce. While the metal could test this support level amid ongoing downward momentum, the council suggests this may present an entry opportunity for investors.
Looking ahead, the WGC identified policy decisions surrounding the US midterm elections and developments in equity and credit markets as primary factors influencing gold prices through the remainder of 2026. Further weakness in equity markets and credit could increase the appeal of US Treasuries, potentially reviving the recent positive correlation between gold prices and yields, while the overall outlook will also depend on easing inflationary pressures.
"The recent correction in gold prices highlights the importance of distinguishing between short-term market volatility and long-term macroeconomic trends. As the World Gold Council notes, strong fundamental backdrops and technical indicators suggest the market is nearing an interim bottom. For businesses and investors managing capital exposure during volatile economic cycles, focusing on structural fundamentals rather than short-term price fluctuations remains a prudent strategy." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
