India recently hosted ASEAN Ambassadors and High Commissioners for a focused briefing on Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) and Maritime Security. The diplomatic visit took place on November 4, 2026, at the Information Fusion Center-Indian Ocean Region (IFC-IOR), as part of the ongoing ASEAN-India Year of Maritime Cooperation.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared details of the event on X, highlighting the engagement between India and ASEAN diplomatic representatives. The visit provided the delegation with a firsthand look at the Centre's operational capabilities and its multinational International Liaison Officer (ILO) framework. Representatives also reviewed the Centre's role in facilitating timely maritime information sharing and coordinated responses to incidents at sea.
Discussions during the visit focused heavily on emerging maritime security challenges, regional awareness, and opportunities to strengthen collaborative MDA. Both sides emphasized the importance of closer engagement between India and ASEAN nations to ensure a safe, secure, and stable Indian Ocean Region (IOR). These collaborative efforts align with India's Act East policy and the MAHASAGAR vision—Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions—which was announced in 2025 to emphasize sustainability, resilience, and collective responsibility in maritime commons.
India's renewed focus on maritime security and the safety of seafarers comes against the backdrop of vessel attacks amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia and Europe. Last month, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reiterated India's commitment to ASEAN centrality during the 13th ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus (ADMM-Plus) held in the Philippines. Speaking at the forum, Singh noted that ASEAN centrality remains a cornerstone of India's Act East Policy and Indo-Pacific vision, expressing hope that such multilateral meetings will strengthen mutual trust, tackle emerging disruptions, and advance defence cooperation between member states.
"Diplomatic and strategic engagements focusing on maritime domain awareness play a critical role in maintaining regional stability, which directly impacts trade, supply chains, and macroeconomic growth across the Indo-Pacific region. For businesses operating in international trade and logistics, a secure and predictable maritime environment reduces operational risks and fosters long-term economic resilience across emerging markets." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
