Tata Consultancy Services and SASTRA University have established a new Centre of Excellence in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The initiative aims to train students in Japanese language, business skills, and specialized technologies to meet growing demand in the Japanese IT market.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced the launch of the TCS-SASTRA Japan Technology Centre of Excellence (CoE) at SASTRA University in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. The initiative is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between TCS and the university to develop a talent pipeline equipped for Japan-oriented technology roles.

The launch event was attended by K. Krithivasan, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TCS, and Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam, Vice-Chancellor of SASTRA University. The CoE integrates SASTRA's academic and Japanese-language capabilities with TCS's industry expertise, exposing students to real-world problem statements and projects.

According to TCS, the centre is designed to provide multidisciplinary training across various technologies including Java, Mainframe, .NET, Cloud, Google Cloud Platform, Generative AI, Python, Playwright, and Pega. In addition to technical domains, students will receive instruction in Japanese language and cultural proficiency, alongside mentoring from TCS subject matter experts and engagement with TCS Japan Operations.

Commenting on the initiative, K. Krithivasan stated that Japan's steadily growing IT services market presents an opportunity for Indian talent. He noted that the partnership aims to build a sustainable pool of professionals skilled in technologies like Gen AI, Python, Playwright, and Pega, alongside the Japanese language.

Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam added that the Indo-Japan CoE aligns with bilateral diplomatic relations entering their 75th year in 2027. He stated that building bilingual tech graduates will support bilateral trade and commerce by addressing critical skill gaps.

This development adds to TCS's broader strategy of establishing Centres of Excellence across priority academic institutions in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Internet of Things, and Data, bringing industry expertise directly into educational environments.

"Bridging the gap between academia and industry requirements is essential for preparing students for global markets. The partnership between TCS and SASTRA University to establish a Japan-focused Technology Centre of Excellence addresses a specific demand in the international IT services sector. By combining technical training in areas like Generative AI and Python with language and cultural proficiency, this model effectively equips students for cross-border opportunities. Such targeted skill development initiatives strengthen institutional readiness and open up new avenues for technical talent on a global scale." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
