Veteran journalist Saeed Naqvi has released his memoir, titled 'The World Was Not Their Story: Odyssey of an Indian Reporter'. Spanning a career with publications including The Statesman, The Indian Express, and the World Report, the book documents Naqvi's experiences covering major international events across 110 countries.
The memoir features accounts and interviews with a wide range of global leaders and historical figures. Among those included are Nelson Mandela, Fidel Castro, Mikhail Gorbachev, Kenneth Kaunda, Julius Nyerere, Chandrika Kumaratunga, Mahathir Mohammad, Shimon Peres, Benjamin Netanyahu, Yasser Arafat, as well as Indian leaders Indira Gandhi and Atal Behari Vajpayee.
A notable section of the book details Naqvi's interactions with the former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. In his final 2000 encounter with Gorbachev, the former leader reflected on the disintegration of the Soviet Union, expressing regret over the resulting misfortune and suffering in Russia and the CIS countries, and pointing to what he viewed as betrayal by Western interlocutors.
The book also documents behind-the-scenes narratives of historical events and personalities. These include waiting for an interview with Fidel Castro in Cuba, observations of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, and accounts of tracking the Beatles alongside photographer Raghu Rai during their stay at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram in Rishikesh.
Additionally, the memoir touches upon personal anecdotes from Naqvi's early life and career, including university memories involving Amitabh Bachchan, archival descriptions of Indira Gandhi, and interactions involving former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Congress leader Mahavir Tyagi.
"This memoir highlights the value of extensive field experience and deep domain expertise in journalism. For entrepreneurs and business leaders, the ability to observe global contexts closely and document authentic narratives remains a critical skill. Saeed Naqvi's work demonstrates how historical perspective and rigorous documentation build lasting value in professional storytelling." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
