Colgate-Palmolive (India) reported a 12.2 per cent increase in net sales to ₹1,691.57 crore for the September quarter, driven by strong toothpaste volumes and premiumisation. Net profit grew by 4.3 per cent to ₹341.57 crore, moderated by a significant increase in advertising expenditure.

Colgate-Palmolive (India) has released its financial results for the September quarter, registering a 12.2 per cent increase in net sales to ₹1,691.57 crore compared to ₹1,507.24 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year. The oral-care market leader recorded its second consecutive quarter of double-digit domestic growth, supported by high-single-digit toothpaste volume expansion led by premium products and Colgate MaxFresh.

Net profit for the period saw a modest rise of 4.3 per cent, moving from ₹327.51 crore to ₹341.57 crore. The earnings growth was moderated by higher advertising expenditure, despite stronger sales and premiumisation. Profit before tax increased 4.1 per cent to ₹460.22 crore, while employee expenses rose 15.1 per cent to ₹135.92 crore.

The company significantly stepped up its investments in brand building and premiumisation. Advertising expenditure increased by 39.9 per cent to ₹314.82 crore during the quarter, accounting for 18.6 per cent of net sales compared with 14.9 per cent a year earlier. The additional ₹89.72 crore spent on advertising was nearly half of the ₹184.33 crore increase in quarterly sales.

Gross margin expanded slightly from 69.2 per cent to 69.6 per cent, supported by the company's Funding the Growth cost-efficiency programme. However, the net profit margin contracted from 21.7 per cent to 20.2 per cent, reflecting that higher sales and cost savings did not translate into proportionate earnings growth. Adjusted net profit grew by 5.5 per cent after excluding one-offs, including a charge related to GST's inverted duty structure.

Manish Anandani, Managing Director and CEO, stated that the company remains committed to navigating commodity cost fluctuations through disciplined cost savings and calibrated pricing actions.

During the quarter, Colgate introduced Harry Potter-themed oral-care products and Bluey-themed toothpaste with a pump dispenser. Marketing initiatives featured campaigns for Colgate Visible White and partnerships with athletes for Colgate Total, alongside a consumption push into Q3 through a partnership for Kaun Banega Crorepati.

For the first half of the financial year, net sales rose 12.1 per cent to ₹3,282.13 crore from ₹2,927.88 crore, while net profit increased 5.6 per cent to ₹684.65 crore from ₹648.13 crore. Additionally, the board declared an interim dividend of ₹24 per share, involving a total payout of ₹652.77 crore.

"Colgate's latest quarterly performance demonstrates how established market leaders continue to drive top-line growth through premiumisation and strong volume expansion, even as aggressive brand investments temporarily moderate net margins. For businesses and emerging brands alike, balancing marketing expenditures with rigorous cost-efficiency programmes is critical when scaling operations in a competitive consumer market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
