Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla announced on Saturday that the conglomerate plans to make further investments in Uttar Pradesh, building upon its already significant industrial presence in the state.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the 15th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University) in Varanasi, Birla noted the group's long-standing connection to the region. While confirming the expansion plans, he did not disclose the proposed investment amount, specific timelines, or the sectors in which the group intends to deploy capital.
Addressing queries regarding potential collaborations between IIT (BHU) and Hindalco, an Aditya Birla Group company, Birla clarified that no specific discussions concerning Hindalco took place during the event.
Beyond corporate expansion, Birla focused heavily on the structural gap between businesses and educational institutions in India. He stressed the need for a stronger bridge between industry and academia, arguing that closer cooperation would allow businesses to leverage high-quality research being conducted locally.
"Today, there is no bridge between industry and academia. Academic institutions in India are now conducting very high-quality research on different subjects, including topics relevant to industry," Birla said. He added that such partnerships would mutually benefit students through applied research and provide companies with access to institutional innovation.
Emphasizing the macroeconomic context, Birla stated that India is entering a critical developmental phase. He described the coming decades as some of the most consequential in the country's trajectory, reinforcing the importance of active engagement between educational bodies and commercial enterprises.
Directly addressing graduating students, Birla remarked that the economic landscape in India currently presents unprecedented opportunities. He advised young professionals to focus on continuous learning, adaptability, and emotional resilience to navigate the evolving business environment successfully.
"Kumar Mangalam Birla's emphasis on industrial expansion in Uttar Pradesh highlights the state's growing appeal as a major economic hub. More importantly, his focus on bridging the gap between industry and academia is a critical blueprint for sustainable growth. When large conglomerates actively collaborate with institutions like IIT (BHU), it not only accelerates applied research but also ensures that young graduates are better equipped to contribute to India's evolving economic landscape." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
