Airbnb has announced a new funding model that will allocate a portion of revenue from every stay booked on its platform to Airbnb.org. The initiative aims to channel $500 million to the independent nonprofit over five years to support housing initiatives for people in crisis.

NEW DELHI: Short-term rental platform Airbnb has announced a new funding mechanism that ties every booking made on its platform to its independent nonprofit arm, Airbnb.org. The company stated on Thursday that the initiative is designed to channel $500 million to the organization over a five-year period.

Under the new model, which takes effect immediately, Airbnb will contribute $0.10 for every stay booked on its platform. The company clarified that this contribution will not alter the prices paid by guests or the payouts received by hosts, and neither party is required to opt in for the donation to occur. However, stays that are cancelled before check-in, as well as bookings for experiences and services, are excluded from the arrangement.

The primary stated goal of the funding model is to help Airbnb.org provide one million nights of free housing annually to individuals facing crises. Airbnb.org was officially established in 2020, building upon a grassroots effort that began in 2012 when a platform host provided shelter to people displaced by Hurricane Sandy. Since its inception, the nonprofit has delivered more than 1.6 million nights of free housing to over 250,000 people around the world. According to Airbnb, the organization responded to more than 200 disasters this year alone, compared to eight disasters in 2023.

With the capital raised through the new $500 million pledge, Airbnb.org plans to expand its operations into three specific new areas. These include supporting families traveling for medical care across more than 20 countries by the end of 2026, providing temporary lodging to survivors of domestic violence and exploitation, and extending assistance to veterans in the United States who are dealing with serious illnesses or undergoing intensive treatment.

Additionally, Airbnb noted that it covers all of Airbnb.org’s operating costs. This structure ensures that 100 percent of public donations directed to the nonprofit go straight toward housing initiatives rather than administrative overhead.

"Integrating social impact directly into core business transactions is an interesting approach to corporate philanthropy. By tying contributions to a fixed amount per booking without affecting pricing or host payouts, Airbnb has created a scalable, automated funding model. For businesses looking at long-term corporate responsibility, embedding contributions seamlessly into operational revenue can ensure consistent support for nonprofit arms while maintaining customer and partner alignment." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
