BHEEMUNIPATNAM / VISAKHAPATNAM — The aviation and economic landscape of Andhra Pradesh entered a transformative new phase on Monday as commercial flight operations officially commenced at the Alluri Sitarama Raju International Airport in Bhogapuram. The milestone was inaugurated by Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu, who personally handed over boarding passes to passengers and flagged off the maiden services at the state-of-the-art greenfield facility.
The inaugural milestone was marked by the arrival of the first commercial flight, operated by IndiGo, arriving directly from Hyderabad. This was closely followed by an Air India Express flight originating from Bengaluru, signaling robust initial carrier interest and connectivity. The airport itself was earlier inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 1, setting the stage for operational readiness.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the infrastructure, Union Minister Naidu emphasized that the airport is designed not merely as a transit hub, but as a cultural landmark reflecting the heritage of North Andhra. He extended formal appreciation to the local farming community for parting with their land for the project, as well as to GMR Group authorities for executing the development. The region, historically categorized as economically backward, is now positioned to experience a monumental turnaround in terms of industrial investments, tourism inflow, and job creation.
The launch of Bhogapuram airport also coincides with a major operational shift in the region. Scheduled commercial flight operations at the older Visakhapatnam Airport officially ceased on August 16, following the departure of the final commercial service—IndiGo flight 6E 2018 bound for Delhi. While the closure has stirred mixed emotions among locals and dependent workers facing an uncertain future, the government has clarified that Visakhapatnam Airport's infrastructure will now be dedicated to general aviation and private flight operations.
To ensure seamless passenger movement and cargo logistics, the government is aggressively scaling up regional connectivity. Several arterial road widening projects are already underway, alongside seven major road infrastructure initiatives—including the strategic Sontyam road connecting from the Simhachalam side. Additionally, a newly sanctioned Beach Corridor project will soon provide a picturesque and efficient coastal route connecting Visakhapatnam directly to the Bhogapuram airport.
