The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has launched a new WhatsApp service for its subscribers, allowing them to check their provident fund balance and access passbook information directly through the messaging platform. The initiative was launched by Union Labour & Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya during EPFO's 74th Foundation Day celebration.
Through the newly introduced WhatsApp channel, EPFO members can view their latest five transactions and passbook details. Additionally, the service provides personalised guidance and assistance for completing requirements related to the PMVBRY scheme. Officials stated that this digital channel is designed to eliminate the need for physical visits to EPFO offices for routine transactions.
The deployment of the WhatsApp service follows background logistics upgrades and data transformation work carried out online by the EPFO since mid-September. During the launch event, Minister Mandaviya emphasized the importance of addressing worker grievances with empathy and commended technological transformations such as CITES 2.01. He urged officials to focus on worker-centric innovations as the organisation approaches its 75th year.
Chandra Bhushan Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Labour & Employment, noted during the proceedings that social protection and labour reforms must extend to unorganised sector workers at the last mile. Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ramesh Krishnamurthi shared details on the institution's scale, noting that EPFO currently serves approximately eight crore contributory members and 85 lakh pensioners, while safeguarding a retirement corpus of nearly ₹32 lakh crore.
The Ministry also highlighted operational improvements stemming from the CITES 2.01 technological transformation. According to official data, the average claim settlement time declined to 2.57 days in October 2026, reflecting ongoing efforts to make provident fund access faster and more convenient for members.
"The integration of essential citizen services with widely used platforms like WhatsApp marks a practical step toward reducing administrative friction for millions of subscribers. By streamlining routine tasks such as checking PF balances and passbook details digitally, institutions can significantly lower physical office visits and improve operational efficiency. For organizations managing large-scale public funds and retirement corpuses, continuous technological upgrades are essential to meet growing user expectations for transparency and faster service delivery." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
