Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman chaired the 30th meeting of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) in New Delhi on Friday, October 23, 2026. The high-level meeting saw the participation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, heads of various financial sector regulators, and senior government officials.
According to an official social media update by the Ministry of Finance, the discussions centered on the apex-level forum's mandate. The FSDC is primarily responsible for addressing issues related to financial stability, financial sector development, and inter-regulatory coordination.
The meeting was attended by key administrative figures, including secretaries from the Department of Economic Affairs, the Department of Revenue, and the Department of Financial Services. The Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India was also present alongside the leadership of major financial regulatory bodies.
Attendees included the chairpersons of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India (IBBI). Additionally, senior officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) participated in the deliberations.
Established through a government notification on December 30, 2010, the FSDC operates under the chairmanship of the Union Finance Minister. Its statutory objectives encompass macroprudential supervision of the economy, monitoring the functioning of large financial conglomerates, advancing financial inclusion, and promoting financial literacy.
The council and its subcommittee—which is chaired by the RBI Governor—regularly review matters concerning financial stability and regulatory harmonization, recommending necessary policy actions to maintain economic resilience.
"Regular coordination meetings between the Finance Ministry, RBI, and key regulators like SEBI and IRDAI are essential for maintaining macroprudential stability in India's financial ecosystem. For businesses and startups operating within this landscape, regulatory clarity and systemic stability provide a predictable environment for long-term planning and growth. The inclusion of bodies like MeitY and CERT-In also highlights the growing importance of digital and technological risk management in modern economic policymaking." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
