India’s general insurance industry is expected to experience modest growth in the financial year 2027, according to a recent market report. The sector faces intense competition and pricing pressures, particularly within the motor insurance segment, though robust demand for retail health insurance and easing price aggression in the fire segment are anticipated to support overall market expansion.
During the second quarter of financial year 2026-27, the general insurance industry recorded an approximate 7 per cent year-on-year growth in Gross Direct Premium Income (GDPI). This performance was underpinned by steady activity in the motor and health insurance categories, which helped offset declines observed in other segments.
The retail health insurance segment emerged as a key growth driver, registering around 32 per cent year-on-year growth during the quarter. Market reports indicate this was fueled by sustained consumer demand, improved affordability, and benefits arising from Goods and Services Tax (GST) adjustments. For the first half of financial year 2026-27, retail health insurance remained the fastest-growing category at approximately 31 per cent year-on-year growth. Private multiline general insurers outperformed Standalone Health Insurers in this space, posting roughly 40 per cent year-on-year growth compared to 36 per cent for SAHIs, while public sector undertaking insurers recorded a more modest growth of around 6 per cent.
In the motor insurance category, the Own Damage segment grew by approximately 16 per cent year-on-year in the first half of the fiscal year, aided by healthy new vehicle sales and reduced GST rates. Private multiline players drove this momentum, clocking about 17 per cent year-on-year growth, whereas public sector units posted around 14 per cent growth. Meanwhile, the Motor Third-Party insurance segment recorded a growth rate of about 10 per cent, and group health insurance premiums increased by approximately 14 per cent.
Despite these gains in the motor and health segments, the overall 7 per cent GDPI growth for the industry was partially offset by contractions in the crop and fire segments. The commercial lines segment's GDPI declined by about 5 per cent year-on-year in the first half of financial year 2026-27, primarily driven by a 21 per cent decline in the fire and engineering segment.
Looking ahead, the industry's growth trajectory will be shaped by continued pricing aggression and high competitive intensity in the Motor OD segment, alongside the ongoing momentum in retail health and the easing of pricing competition in the fire segment from the second half of the year onward. Against this operating environment, large private general insurers are expected to place a heightened focus on profitability.
Additionally, proposed distribution reforms are anticipated to bring better market discipline to the general insurance sector, though industry participants remain watchful of the final regulatory framework once published.
"The general insurance sector in India is experiencing a transitional phase where top-line growth is being carefully balanced against margin pressures, particularly in motor and commercial lines. While retail health remains a bright spot driven by structural and tax factors, insurers must prioritize disciplined underwriting and operational efficiency. As the regulatory landscape evolves with proposed distribution reforms, market players that focus on sustainable profitability rather than sheer volume will navigate the competitive pressures of FY27 much more effectively." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
