Mozambique is looking to deepen its agricultural ties with India by adopting Indian agro-processing techniques and utilizing its ports for regional trade. Antonio Do Rosário Grispos, Secretary of State for Trade of Mozambique, highlighted India's key role in supporting the nation's food security during the Bharat International Rice Conference.

Mozambique is seeking to strengthen its agricultural partnership with India by leveraging Indian expertise in agro-processing and utilizing its strategic ports to expand trade access across Southern Africa. Antonio Do Rosário Grispos, Secretary of State for Trade of Mozambique, shared these details on the sidelines of the Bharat International Rice Conference.

Grispos stated that Mozambique aims to enhance cooperation in agricultural technology and processing while establishing the country as a gateway for Indian businesses looking to access markets in the region. He noted that the partnership could help draw on Indian experience and technologies to develop Mozambique's domestic agricultural sector.

Highlighting current import figures, Grispos mentioned that Mozambique imports approximately 600,000 tonnes of rice annually, with the majority of these supplies originating from India. This established trade flow underpins India's significant role in supporting Mozambique's national food security.

Furthermore, the trade official pointed to Mozambique's geographical advantage, explaining that its ports serve as critical entry points for landlocked countries in Southern Africa. This positioning creates opportunities to facilitate regional commerce and improve market access for Indian enterprises.

Grispos also touched upon the historical and cultural connections between the two nations, noting the presence of the Indian community in Mozambique for over five centuries. He described India as a strategic partner and noted that policy alignment between Mozambican President Daniel Chapo and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi continues to support bilateral engagement.

The Bharat International Rice Conference serves as a platform for industry stakeholders to explore opportunities across the rice value chain, strengthen international trade partnerships, and discuss measures to enhance food security. For both nations, the current focus on agro-processing, rice trade, and regional market access presents an avenue to expand bilateral economic cooperation.

"The growing economic partnership between India and Mozambique highlights significant opportunities for cross-border collaboration in the agricultural and logistics sectors. As emerging economies look to modernize supply chains and leverage regional trade gateways, bilateral frameworks centered around food security and agro-processing can create sustainable avenues for business expansion and international commerce." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
