Competition in India's rapid delivery sector has intensified as Flipkart Minutes surpassed Swiggy Instamart in dark-store count across the country's top 10 quick-commerce cities, according to data from a CLSA report. Flipkart Minutes registered 627 stores compared to Swiggy Instamart's 615.
The CLSA Quick Commerce Map indicates that the top 10 cities collectively account for 3,536 dark stores. Blinkit leads the market with 969 stores, followed by Zepto with 828 stores, Flipkart Minutes at 627, Swiggy Instamart at 615, and BigBasket at 497. The figures exclude Amazon and JioMart from the total count.
Geographically, Blinkit maintains the largest store footprint in six of the ten cities, including Bengaluru, Delhi, Pune, Gurgaon, Lucknow, and Ahmedabad. Zepto leads in Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Chennai, while Flipkart Minutes holds the highest store count in Kolkata, where it operates 72 stores against Swiggy's 35.
In Bengaluru, the largest quick-commerce market in the sample with 735 stores, Blinkit operates 180 stores, closely followed by Zepto at 177, Swiggy Instamart at 143, and Flipkart Minutes at 119. In Delhi, Blinkit leads with 188 stores, compared to Zepto's 112, Flipkart Minutes' 102, and Swiggy's 69. In Mumbai, Flipkart Minutes and Swiggy operate 67 and 62 stores respectively.
Despite trailing Flipkart Minutes in aggregate count across the top 10 cities, Swiggy continues to expand its network. The broader analysis notes that Swiggy added the highest number of dark stores among the top three players over the past month, pointing toward a densification strategy in established markets.
The CLSA report highlights that quick-commerce players are both deepening their presence in existing markets and selectively expanding into new geographies. Emerging platforms are increasingly targeting underpenetrated pincodes and smaller cities to establish early footholds and secure first-mover advantages before incumbents arrive.
Blinkit maintains a broader geographic reach, extending well beyond the top 10 cities with an exclusive presence in more than 180 cities. The report notes that store density remains crucial for positioning inventory closer to consumers, which supports faster deliveries, broader product assortment, and better logistics utilization.
"The quick-commerce sector in India is witnessing intense competition as players focus on density and regional penetration rather than just broad city presence. Flipkart Minutes overtaking Swiggy Instamart in dark-store count across the top 10 cities demonstrates how rapidly new entrants can scale infrastructure to challenge incumbents. For business leaders, this highlights that securing strategic pincodes and optimizing supply chain logistics are critical to capturing market share in high-growth urban landscapes." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
