The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has established a dedicated cell specifically designed to assist start-ups and emerging food brands. According to the regulator's social media announcement, the new cell is aimed at helping first-time founders navigate complex food safety regulations, licensing requirements, and compliance standards.
In recent months, the regulator has increased its focus on stricter enforcement actions against regulatory violations. The newly launched initiative is intended to bridge the knowledge gap for new businesses entering the food sector.
According to the FSSAI, the dedicated cell will provide guidance across a broad spectrum of areas. These include licensing and registration, product standards, categories and approvals, labelling and advertising claims, testing procedures, imports, and e-commerce compliances.
Highlighting the rationale behind the move, the regulator noted in a social media post that India's food start-up ecosystem is evolving rapidly, but navigating food safety regulations can prove challenging for new entrepreneurs.
To support businesses effectively, the initiative includes structured support mechanisms. The FSSAI will host weekly online interactions designed to offer live query resolution for founders. Additionally, a dedicated email help desk has been set up to handle specific regulatory inquiries.
The initiative also introduces cross-divisional support, aiming to provide seamless and coordinated guidance across various FSSAI departments.
The regulator stated that it expects the initiative to provide start-ups with easier access to regulatory guidance and foster a better understanding of compliance requirements. By simplifying these processes, the FSSAI hopes to reduce the risk of avoidable errors among emerging enterprises.
Furthermore, the cell is expected to serve as a feedback channel for start-ups to communicate recurring regulatory challenges. The authority believes this two-way communication will lead to greater overall awareness regarding FSSAI portals and existing guidance materials.
"The establishment of a dedicated start-up cell by the FSSAI is a positive and timely step for India's emerging food sector. Regulatory compliance is often one of the biggest hurdles for first-time founders, leading to operational delays and avoidable errors. By introducing structured support mechanisms such as weekly online interactions and a dedicated help desk, the regulator is actively reducing friction for early-stage enterprises. This proactive engagement will help build a more transparent, compliant, and sustainable food start-up ecosystem in the long run." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
