India has opened applications for eligible sugar millers and refiners to allocate the remaining 202,550 tonnes under a 1 million-tonne duty-free raw sugar import quota. The government had initially sought applications last month ahead of the festival season demand.

NEW DELHI: India has invited applications from eligible sugar millers and refiners to allocate the remaining 202,550 metric tonnes of raw sugar under a duty-free import quota of 1 million tonnes approved by New Delhi last month, according to a government circular issued on Tuesday.

The government initially sought applications last month for duty-free imports of 1 million tonnes of raw sugar to remain open until October 31. The timing coincided with the approach of the country's festival season, a period when domestic sugar consumption typically peaks due to strong demand for traditional sweets.

According to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade, applications totalling 797,450 tonnes have already been received and allocated under an earlier notice. This leaves a balance of 202,550 tonnes still available for allocation under the established 1 million-tonne quota.

"The government's decision to open applications for the remaining balance of the duty-free raw sugar import quota highlights a structured approach to managing domestic supply and demand during peak consumption cycles like the festival season. For sugar millers and refiners, this remaining allocation presents a timely opportunity to secure raw material efficiently. Monitoring how quickly this residual quota is absorbed will provide clear signals about near-term inventory levels and market stability in the domestic sugar sector." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
