NEW DELHI — IndiGo, India's largest airline, is currently engaged in early-stage discussions to acquire 100 regional jets from Brazilian planemaker Embraer, alongside options for approximately 50 additional aircraft. According to sources with direct knowledge of the matter, the transaction could rank as one of the largest commercial aircraft orders ever placed with Embraer.
Both IndiGo and Embraer did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the ongoing talks. Sources emphasized that the potential agreement is not guaranteed, and both the specific aircraft model and final order quantities remain undecided.
If the negotiations successfully conclude, deliveries for the aircraft are likely to commence from or after 2030. At standard list prices, an order of 100 jets would be valued in the billions of dollars, although commercial aircraft transactions typically involve negotiated discounts.
Embraer has actively pursued the Indian commercial aviation market. Earlier this year, the planemaker signed a non-binding agreement with Adani Defence & Aerospace to explore establishing a final assembly line in India for its E175 jets, which have a seating capacity of up to 88 passengers. In addition to the E175, Embraer manufactures the larger E190-E2 and E195-E2 models, designed to accommodate up to 114 and 146 passengers respectively.
While preliminary discussions between the carrier and the planemaker have previously surfaced, the details regarding the specific volume of 100 planes and the 50 options under consideration mark a new development in the ongoing evaluation of regional fleet expansion.
"Fleet expansion and long-term capacity planning are critical components of scaling operations in the aviation sector. IndiGo's early-stage exploration of regional jets indicates a strategic focus on network connectivity and fleet diversification. For the broader business ecosystem, large-scale capital investments of this magnitude highlight the sustained growth and long-term demand within India's transportation infrastructure." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
