German carrier Lufthansa has officially begun commercial operations of its high-speed in-flight internet service powered by Starlink. Company CEO Jens Ritter activated the system aboard an Airbus A320neo registered as "D-AINM" on August 19, 2026. The inaugural flight, operating as flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome, marked the first time a Lufthansa Group aircraft carried the new connectivity technology in scheduled service.
According to the company statement, the airline aims to deploy the Starlink-powered Wi-Fi across approximately 850 aircraft throughout the Lufthansa Group by 2029. The rollout covers both short- and long-haul routes, extending connectivity capabilities across oceans and deserts from take-off to landing.
The new onboard service provides free, high-speed internet access that allows passengers to utilize cloud-based work platforms and other high-bandwidth applications during flights. The network supports multiple device connections simultaneously. However, the airline's current policy restricts active participation in voice and video calls, as well as the active recording and transmission of live video content with or without audio.
Access to the Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi is provided free of charge for registered users of the Lufthansa Group loyalty programme and Travel ID holders. Passengers can log on by enabling flight mode, turning on device Wi-Fi, and selecting the "Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi" network. Users are automatically redirected to a login portal, or they can manually navigate to wifi.lufthansa.com to complete the connection steps.
At present, the service is limited to selected aircraft within the fleet. Because availability cannot yet be checked prior to travel, Lufthansa Group airlines plan to introduce a dedicated flight search feature on their websites as the installation across the fleet progresses. The company also intends to integrate additional flight-related information and services into the portal in the future.
Commenting on the rollout, Lufthansa Airlines CEO Jens Ritter stated that the investment is part of the airline's broader fleet modernization and service enhancement efforts, providing state-of-the-art technology to passengers across its routes.
"Lufthansa's large-scale rollout of high-speed satellite internet highlights how legacy industries are increasingly adopting advanced technology infrastructure to meet evolving customer expectations. For businesses and frequent travelers, reliable connectivity in transit transforms travel time into productive working hours. Over the next few years, scaling such technology across a fleet of 850 aircraft will require complex operational execution, setting a benchmark for premium passenger experience in the global aviation sector." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
