The Bombay Milk Producers Association has announced a ₹9 per litre hike in wholesale milk prices across Mumbai and nearby metropolitan areas, taking the rate to ₹102 per litre starting September 1, 2026. The revised pricing will remain in effect through February 28, 2027, driven by increasing operational and cattle feed costs.

Household budgets in Mumbai will face increased pressure ahead of the festive season following an announcement by the Bombay Milk Producers Association (BMPA). The association has confirmed a ₹9 per litre increase in wholesale milk prices across Mumbai and its adjoining metropolitan supply networks.

Beginning September 1, 2026, the wholesale rate for milk will rise from ₹93 per litre to ₹102 per litre. The dairy association stated that this revised rate will remain locked for a six-month window, staying effective through February 28, 2027.

Dairy farmers and tabela operators across the region cited escalating operational pressures as the primary reason for the price revision. The cost of essential cattle feed components, including green fodder, chuni, and oil cakes, has risen steadily over the past year. In addition, increasing transportation fees and livestock maintenance expenses have added to the financial strain on producers.

For ordinary Mumbaikars, the wholesale increase is expected to translate into higher daily expenses. Local retail vendors, neighborhood dairies, and doorstep tabela suppliers are anticipated to pass the price increase directly to end consumers.

Beyond household consumption, the price adjustment will impact local bakeries, sweet shops, and eateries across the city. With bulk procurement costs rising, consumers can also expect secondary price adjustments on everyday dairy staples such as curd, paneer, and festive sweets during the second half of the year.

"The upcoming wholesale milk price hike in Mumbai highlights the direct impact of rising input costs, such as cattle feed and transportation, on everyday supply chains. For local businesses, particularly small food vendors, bakeries, and sweet shops relying heavily on dairy staples, absorbing these increased procurement expenses will be a significant operational challenge. Business owners will need to carefully evaluate their pricing strategies and supply chain efficiencies to manage these cost pressures effectively as the festive season approaches." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
